The Original Pancake House Only Makes Food from Scratch

Yesterday, I was honored to be invited to a media brunch at one of my family’s favorite breakfast places in town, The Original Pancake House. The Original Pancake House has been creating made-from-scratch greatness since 1953. The combination of quality and hospitality at each location is the basis for why we have kept returning to The Original Pancake House for many years. I have to admit that my husband and I have a strategy when we go here; we order a specialty pancake and an egg dish, and then we split them. Here’s my ALL-TIME favorite menu item at The Original Pancake House: The Apple Pancake.
IMG_6167As soon as you are seated, order your Apple Pancake as it takes 15-30 minutes for it to be prepared. It is big enough to split with someone, and it just warms the stomach and soul. 😉 The next thing that we tried was the Dutch Baby, which was new for me. It comes to the table puffed, and you have to add whipped butter, lemon and finish it with powered sugar to create a nice glaze to fully enjoy this traditional German dish.IMG_6189Don’t forget to add a side of their thick cut of bacon or sausage to go along with these above dishes.IMG_6191For those of you who may have dietary restrictions, no problem! Gluten-free Ancient Grains Pancakes are amazing. They have just enough fluff in the pancakes that you would not even know they are gluten-free. Also, the “Mark,” a plate of steamed vegetables and egg whites, has fresh flavor for those of you looking to have a heart-healthy breakfast or a whole foods diet.OPHHealthyAre you an egg lover? You would absolutely love their omelettes that are french rolled and oven baked. I tried their Mediterranean Omelette that was full of spinach, olives, tomatoes and feta cheese with just the perfect fluff of the eggs.IMG_6204The Original Pancake House also offers lunch items like a Club Sandwich and other sweet breakfast items like the Coffee Maple Banana Crepe that also are perfect for a dessert with a latte.OPHSidesLastly, The Original Pancake House would not be what it is without their buttermilk pancakes. Did you know that their buttermilk pancakes take 5 days to make?! Yes, you read that correctly. It takes 4 days for the yeast to fully grow. They add their own buttermilk to the yeasted batter which then ages for another 24 hours. You can tell they use ingredients made from scratch after the first bite, and man, it was worth the wait. Spread some butter, whipped daily to help melt it quickly on top of the pancakes, and you will be comforted for the rest of the day. 😉

The Original Pancake House is my #1 favorite place for breakfast. I don’t ever mind the wait when I order my favorite items. I just sit in anticipation of what is to come. There’s no other place like it. I’ve never gotten a dish that I didn’t absolutely love.
My eye doctor is located close by and I schedule all my appointments around mealtime so I can visit OPH again. I’ll be a fan until the end!
    Thank You OPH

Thank you for writing such a wonderful article. Buttermilk pancakes are my favorite food in the universe, and the Original Pancake House makes the best buttermilk pancakes I have ever tasted. The key is the sourdough starter which you hinted at toward the end of this piece. The yeasty-malty flavor of the finished product is unreal! I have been trying to duplicate them for quite some time, to no avail. 🙂
Anyway, it was great to read such a nice story about this wonderful restaurant from someone who appreciates the quality of their food. Thanks again, from Chicago.
