As a writer, there is one thing that I cannot live without – COFFEE, but not just any coffee. I need a dark roast to start out my day to help my creative juices flowing. Last week, I went to Walmart to stock up on my Starbucks Dark French Roast coffee for my husband and me. (Note: he can only drink decaf and well, I have to have the real deal.) While I shopping, I decided to treat myself to some Turtle Brownies to go with my coffee in the morning. I like the taste of the nutty notes of the French Roast with a complementing sweet chocolate treat with a drizzle caramel.
Now that I had my writing snacks, I am ready to begin working. Ready, set, rhyme! April is National Poetry Month. I have to confess, though, that I haven’t written a poem since my first anniversary gift to my husband almost 13 years ago. But, as I look outside my window and see the spring flowers peeking through, it’s a great time of year to let nature inspire you or just express yourself. Food tends to inspire me, so as I sipped my coffee and took a bite of my brownie, I began to write a memory of a future morning.
A Delicious Pairing
It was a blissful morning, with the sun rising
Like every morning, I smelt the dark roast coffee.
He made a pot of French Roast coffee, out of his love,
That’s what I like call it, as he knew I loved coffee.
The grounds he scooped up in a spoon, with such grace,
And the plate of brownies that was a perfect match.
I sat with him and talked, and the talk was like the brownies,
A little bit of nuts and something sweet and rich as well,
Always with a napkin and a thank you, we sat and visited
And I watched him enjoy the moment.
Until the children woke up and giggled in the room,
And then we ended our adored time. The visit was spiritual,
The way coffee tasted, full-bodied strong, smooth and nice,
Blessing for the soul of a couple living in the world,
Blessing in the tone of His language, which spoke through our hands
In the small lifting of our cups and our treats to our lips.
It was simplicity, and held only what it needed.
It was a gentle visit. It was a delicious pairing.
