Cowboy, Take Me Away!

Recently, Mesquite Rodeo, “Where Legends Begin,” invited my family to a night at the rodeo! Mesquite Rodeo was founded in 1958, and it was decreed as the “Rodeo Capital of Texas.” The Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) season kicked off this summer, and we were there to experience it! The posh boy had never been to a rodeo before, so I was excited to see how he’d react.

We got “gussied up” with our denim and Cowboys hats. After parking ($5), we were greeted at the door with red bandanas. First, we “moseyed” onto the Eight Second Club, where we ate fajitas. I have to admit that I was hoping for Texas BBQ. The environment of the Eight Second Club transports you to an old Western, except modernized with TVs and air-conditioning. 🙂

There was certainly a lot of things for the family to experience at the rodeo, such as hay rides, mutton bustin’ and calf scramble, shopping and various exhibitions for the family to enjoy! Fortunately, the Real Geek Dad and the posh boy were able to take a hay ride around the arena before the rodeo began.

There were seven official competition events:  team roping, tie-down roping, bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding, barrel racing and the posh boy’s favorite event, steer wrestling. I have a newfound respect for the cowboys and cowgirls who competed at the rodeo.  Roping a calf or bull would be hard enough standing in one place with two feet on the ground.  Now doing that while riding on a horse takes incredible skill!

The non-stop action at Mesquite ProRodeo is every Friday and Saturday through August 25, 2012. I highly recommend you taking your “buckaroos” before the season ends. By the way, Clint Black will performing at Mesquite Arena on September 1, 2012. Yee-haw!
