Is Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Appropriate for 7 Year-Olds?

PercyJacksonSeaofMonstersBased on the publishing phenomenon, PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS continues the young demigod’s epic journey to fulfill his destiny. To save their world, Percy and his friends must find the fabled and powerfully magic Golden Fleece. Embarking on a treacherous odyssey into the uncharted waters of the Sea of Monsters (known to humans as the Bermuda Triangle), they battle terrifying creatures, an army of zombies, and the ultimate Evil.

Now, what age will your child enjoy this action-adventure flick? This PG-rated movie has some intense scenes with some creatures that could produce nightmarish images for younger kids. You know best how are adverse to “scary” scenes your kids are, but I took my 6 year-old boy and 8 year-old girl, and my eldest LOVED the movie and wasn’t frightened while my son “didn’t like” scorpion-apes’ pointed tails. By the way, “didn’t like,” means they scared him. Overall, it entertained the whole family.

It’s no surprise that in PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS, you see bravery and a willingness to sacrifice for others. What is surprising is just how much emphasis the film places on those themes, as well as accompanying morals dealing with humility, forgiveness, second chances and the importance of fathers, however imperfect they may be. Much more so than the first film, there are positive and at times genuinely moving themes woven into this story about an adolescent demigod courageously seeking to save a friend…and the world.

How to Throw a Galactic Star Wars Party

We celebrated the posh boy’s 5th Birthday with a Star Wars themed party. It’s no secret that my family LOVES Star Wars, so I went online to search for the perfect party. Thank goodness for Pinterest! It is here that I planned and executed his party in less than a week. First, I found the perfect way to display the party – Yard Candy.

Then, came the menu. I discovered Hello, My Sweet, where they provide invites, signs and food tags for you. You’ll have to figure out where to cut them yourself. I mounted them on black cardstock. The posh boy chose a Star Wars Cake with his Favorite TV Series, Star Wars Clone Wars.
On the menu were Thermal Detonators (Milk Duds), Bantha Milk (Milk with Blue Dye) & Qui-Gon Jinn Ger Snaps (Ginger Snaps).
Other treats were Endor Trail Mix (Pretzel Sticks, Craisins and Goldfish), Lightsabers (Pretzel Rods Coated in Red- & Green-Dyed Candy Melts), Hans Burgers, Palpatine Mini Pizzas and Wookiee Cookies (Click here for recipe.).

Next, I had to figure out what entertainment to provide for 5 year-olds of BOTH genders. This is hard because boys are sooo movement-focused while girls are more social. Let me introduce you to a mom’s best friend – the bounce house. 😉 I added a party favor of blow-up lightsabers for the kids to play with inside and outside of the bounce house. Here’s are some of the fun pictures.

As Yoda wisely stated: “Do or do not. There is no try.”

Fringe Observes Alternate Universes

229292_16534198667_9070_nFringe from creator J.J. Abrams’ has transformed from a freaky, cop procedural into a sprawling saga full of alternate realities and parallel universes, Abrams’ strange creation remains as grisly and creepy as ever.

The title refers to fringe science: psychokinesis, parapsychology, reanimation, you name it. And the Fringe Division at the center of the investigatory action is a joint federal task force supported primarily by the FBI. I love the truly, mad scientist named Walter Bishop, whose last full-time job was downing the pudding at a local insane asylum. I kinda love how he enjoys Red Vines as much as I do when trying to figure out a problem. 😉 While the glad-to-be-free Dr. Bishop is busy dissecting brains and experimenting with psychotropic drugs, FBI agent Olivia Dunham busts the “bad guys” along with Bishop’s jack-of-all-trades son, Peter, who also makes sure his dad doesn’t wander away.

I’d recommend Fringe for kids older than 12 years-old, as there are some blood, gore and squirm-inducing scenes. If you enjoy solving mysteries or sci-fi drama, Fringe is just the show for you.
