2014 Kia Soul Urbanizes the Hatchback
When I received the call that Kia wanted me to test drive their 2014 Soul. I wasn’t excited. I actually turned them down earlier in the year. I am not a fan of the box on wheels concept. BUT, when I stepped in the 2014 Kia Soul ! (Exclaim), my thoughts changed.
For the 2014 Kia Soul !, they have improved the exterior with a sloping roofline that makes it look from the side somewhat like the way more posh Range Rover. It also is slightly longer, lower and wider, with upgraded interiors, easier entry and exit, more front seat travel for taller drivers and exterior trim changes to distinguish it from previous years.
One of my favorite features is a panoramic moonroof, heated and cooled leather seats (the driver’s is powered), heated steering wheel and an eight-inch touchscreen that marks the first appearance of the company’s new Android-based navigation system. Also, the rear passengers have heated seats too, so they is no one left in the cold. 😉 I also like the door panels, along with the combined air vents and speaker grilles that bookend the dashboard like turrets, and the new steering wheel feels better in the hand while offering well-sorted switchgear for cruise control and audio.
The 2.0-liter engine and six-speed automatic delivered decent, though not head snapping, acceleration and passing power. The engine struggled on long hills, requiring downshifts from the transmission. That being put aside, the 2014 Kia Soul is a perfect first car or car for the 20-something in your life who wants add a like “soul.”
