Mentoring the Future with Big Brother Big Sister

Positive role models can make a big impact in the life of an at-risk youth. Big Brothers Big Sisters match children ages 6-18 with adults, who want to make a difference in their lives. They are in a constant need for volunteers, especially men, to mentor these children, or “littles,” as Regional Executive Director Tarrant County Kelly Imig affectionately calls them.

Mentors are asked to serve for a minimum of one year, but the benefits of the relationships begin appearing after that time, so they’re urged to continue longer if possible. “One year is the point at which positive results tend to be seen,” Imig explained. “The longer you go the more positive impact the relationship has.” The mentors meet with their little “sibling” at least once per week. The program sponsors both community mentoring, in which the mentors take their charges on outings around town, or site-based mentoring, in which the mentors meet their littles at a school site.

Thanks to companies such as Reliant Energy who help Big Brothers Big Sisters change the way children grow up in Texas by hosting Home Run Derby.

Yesterday, Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett and eight of the team’s players went to bat for BBBS.

About 150 members of the BBBS organization cheered on the Cowboys at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Cowboys’ Tight End John Phillips was clearly the star of the show by blasting the baseball on the second row of the left field seats.

Home Run Derby resulted in Reliant making a $40,000 donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Consider making a donation or more importantly becoming a mentor for a child. Big Brothers Big Sisters is actively seeking new adult volunteers, especially men. Your impact will be life-changing!

Flying at Reliant Kite Relay Competition for New Friends New Life

The 2nd annual Reliant Kite Relay for Charity kicks off this Friday in celebration of the Reliant Trinity River Wind Festival, which takes place this Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 146 W Commerce at the Trinity River viaduct in downtown Dallas. Reliant Energy invited me to compete by flying a kite at least 50 feet in the air while performing an array of “wind related activities at 5 stations” for a charity of my choice. Anything for charity sounds fun to me!

The charity I will be flying for is New Friends New Life (NFNL). Reliant is generously making a $250 donation to each competitor’s charity and $2,500 to the winner’s charity. New Friends New Life is a faith-based organization located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area that enables women to leave the degradation of the sex industry and to build new lives for themselves and their children. NFNL help women overcome backgrounds of abuse, addiction, poverty, and limited opportunities by providing access to education, job training, interim financial assistance and spiritual support.

I’d love if you can join me on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 11AM-12PM as a NFNL and Real Posh Mom cheerleader. “Hope is knowing that people, like kites, are made to be lifted up.”

Heroes and Handbags

Some people loves shoes while others are purse fanatics. If this is you, come join me at 7th annual “Heroes and Handbags” brunch on Friday, May 4, 2012 beginning at 9:30 AM at Hilton Anatole. In addition to the brunch, there is a silent auction of one of a kind vintage and new designer handbags.

Heroes and Handbags” benefits Heroes for Children, an agency that provide financial and social assistance to Texas families with children (0-22 years of age) battling cancer. Heroes for Children is unique in the fact that they raise money to help relieve the financial burden that is often coupled with the diagnosis of cancer in a child. They pay for things such as: rent, car payments, groceries, electricity bills and even go as far as throwing events for birthdays, graduations and other “milestone” events that take place in a child’s life.

Help eleviate someone else’s “baggage” while showing off yours!

Help Homeless One Pound At A Time

It’s a sad fact of modern life that the number of people without a permanent residence to call their own are growing dramatically. According to the National Coalition For The Homeless, children under the age of 18 made up 39% of the population of homeless shelters, and 42% of those kids were younger than five.

As stressful as my life gets, I have never worried about where my family was going to sleep. I’m one of the lucky ones. Fortunately, there are organizations like Dallas LIFE. The largest homeless shelter in North Texas, Dallas LIFE ministers to the homeless in need both physical and spiritual healing. It provides food, clothing, shelter, education and long-term rehabilitation programs founded on spiritual principals and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Medieval Times in Dallas announced their goal of donating 2,000 pounds of food to Dallas Life. This Thursday, February 9, 2012, bring a non perishable food item and receive 50% off your adult admission! They have already collected 1,306 pounds and 694 more to go.

What a great way to get rid of “your pounds” and give to those who need it!
