Help Homeless One Pound At A Time

It’s a sad fact of modern life that the number of people without a permanent residence to call their own are growing dramatically. According to the National Coalition For The Homeless, children under the age of 18 made up 39% of the population of homeless shelters, and 42% of those kids were younger than five.

As stressful as my life gets, I have never worried about where my family was going to sleep. I’m one of the lucky ones. Fortunately, there are organizations like Dallas LIFE. The largest homeless shelter in North Texas, Dallas LIFE ministers to the homeless in need both physical and spiritual healing. It provides food, clothing, shelter, education and long-term rehabilitation programs founded on spiritual principals and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Medieval Times in Dallas announced their goal of donating 2,000 pounds of food to Dallas Life. This Thursday, February 9, 2012, bring a non perishable food item and receive 50% off your adult admission! They have already collected 1,306 pounds and 694 more to go.

What a great way to get rid of “your pounds” and give to those who need it!

Dallas: Resistance Is Feudal

Each year, there is always that person who is hard to buy a gift. I have found that buying an experience is great for anyone versus something they won’t remember next year. My family just experienced Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament for the first time. I’d highly recommend it for children 5 years and older and for those who aren’t too “proper.” 😉

Medieval Times has recently offered a NEW show that has taken 2 years to make with many new elements and keeps some traditions. The live show will features two-and four-legged performers with a utensil-free meal serviced in a castle-inspired arena.

The new live production presents live jousting, swordplay, horsemanship and falconry. You are encouraged to cheer for one of six “Knights of the Realm” named after historic regions of medieval Spain. With authentic weaponry and enhanced armor, the new production presents non-stop action tied to the tempo of the music. There’s a general theme of “good versus evil” throughout the show.

Guests will even enjoy an upgraded menu for the utensil free meal during the new show.  The menu includes:

Tomato Bisque
Focaccia Bread with Olive Oil and Seasoning
Oven Roasted Chicken
Larger BBQ Spare Rib
Herb-Basted Potato Split into Two Quarters
Spiced Carrot
Braided Apple Strudel
Larger Beverage Servings and Coffee

Guests can purchase tickets at the door or online at www.medievaltimes.com.

Please comment below on why you have or have not been to a dinner show. You can also add your comment on twitter by replying to @realposhmom and @medievaltimes

This post was sponsored by Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament. While I received admission to show, my opinions are 100% my own.

FCA Coaches Appreciation & Leadership Dinner

Come enjoy the third annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Coaches Appreciation and Leadership Dinner on Monday, November 14 from 6:30 PM – 9 PM at Prestonwood Church in Plano. It will feature speaker Jon Kitna and musical guest Brent Lamb.

Kitna is known for being outspoken about his faith. He has said that “When you don’t have a lot of success, as a Christian you really start to learn God’s character and how much He really loves you. And then you become grounded and rooted. Then when we have the success that I think God is bringing our way, we already have a solid foundation.”

This evening was created as a way to say thank all coaches in the Dallas area who volunteer valuable time to partner with FCA through our huddle ministry and various student-oriented events throughout the year. Awards will be presented to honor coaches in the community who have shown outstanding service and leadership.

Tickets are currently available UNTIL this Wednesday, November 9, for purchase here, beginning at $125 for an individual or $1,000 for a table of 8. All proceeds from this event will be supporting the ministry of the Greater Dallas FCA as well as helping thank the wonderful coaches and their spouses.

2012 Chevy Traversed to the Posh Side

Confession: I love cars. Actually, I get giddy test driving them, so when Britain Chevrolet approached me to try out one of their vehicles. My curiosity piqued. There is one thing you have to know about me. I will NEVER, yes NEVER, drive a mini-van. Daniel at Britain Chevy had bigger plans – their 8-passenger crossover 2012 Chevrolet Diamond Traverse.

The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse is an impressive vehicle. Yes, you heard me right. I was surprised how much I loved this ride. It was very refined and smooth. It soaked up bumps large and small, keeping highway chatter from upsetting the cabin. I averaged 19 mpg on gas mileage.

Cargo room distinguishes the Traverse, enough for a large cooler behind the third row. Fold all the seats, and the Traverse has tons of space like a truck but protection from the outdoors. The first and second rows have decent space, and the three-seat second-row bench reclines and slides forward and backward. Adults in the third row may need passengers in the second row to move it forward a few clicks to create sufficient legroom.

Thanks to top scores in all crash tests, the Traverse is a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It also earned an excellent, five-star rating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s challenging side pole test. Standard safety features include three-row curtain airbags and an electronic stability system.

The Diamond Traverse had power accessories including driver seat and steel wheel. Features that I loved included steering-wheel audio controls and Sirius XM radio. Can you guess which station I enjoyed?

I also have never used Bluetooth in a vehicle, but now I think that it is “a must” in ALL vehicles for the ease to communicate on the phone while driving. Finally, not a must but a luxury that I like in all of my cars is the heated and cooled front seats.

You, too, can test drive this vehicle or the Chevrolet Malibu and receive a $40 SpaFinder Gift Card! Click here for more information.

Disclosure: Britain Chevy gave me two weeks to test drive the 2012 Diamond Chevrolet Traverse. These are my opinions.
