Family Summer Vacations are Important Not Just Fun!

family-vacation-quotes

It’s August and as summer vacation time begins to wind down I am more than a little emotional thinking about the last summer of my boy’s high school years.   We just got back from our annual summer family vacation and this time it was our family’s first cruise together.   Some years we have had big vacations (Florida, Colorado, California, Europe, New York, and DC) and others years we’ve taken shorter and closer to home summer vacations like San Antonio and Galveston.   But I have always made sure we do something to get away for a few days because I am a huge believer in the importance of family summer vacations.

Cruise Summer 2015 3021

“We can’t afford it”, “I can’t take the time off from work” or “The kids are too busy with summer activities” are the standard excuses that most people give.   They may all be great reasons why you shouldn’t but there are many more reasons why you should.  But first,  I want to be specific here, it’s okay to go on trips with other families or friends sometimes but I believe that you will not get the same benefits from those trips.  I’m talking about your family, whether it’s both parents or a single parent and your kids (and not your kids’ friends tagging along to keep them entertained).   These trips should be about you and your core family and the time you spend bonding, sharing experiences. and getting to know your children even better.  They are forced to interact with you, no distractions like video games, TV, etc.  Some distractions are okay occasionally, but make sure you have rules about it.  We’re here to bond kids, okay?

Here are some of the many benefits that you and your family will gain:

  1. Your kids grow up really fast and won’t be kids forever….

My twin boys, Jack and Jared will be seniors in high school this year.  It seems like they were in grade school the day before yesterday.  If your kids are still really young it probably seems like time is crawling.  But believe me when I tell you  (and everyone else who has kids) that your time with them will fly by.  Don’t say to yourself that you will take a vacation when they’re older, or when we have more money, or use a million other excuses.  Just do it. There will be a time after they graduate from high school and have busy lives of their own when it just won’t happen.  Don’t allow them NOT to go on the family vacation.  You’re the parent here.

Family Photo San Antonio 2010.JPG2

I’ll be honest. some vacations will be more successful than others but here’s where planning skills come in.  That’s what we have the internet for!  Take in consideration your kids’ ages and select appropriate activities for them.  There are many websites available to help you plan that dream family vacation.

  1. Vacations mean spending quality time with your family

This is a huge benefit.  Families are consistently on the go. There’s work, school, sports and numerous other activities that distract you from each other.   Vacations force you to spend quality time together.   You will actually eat meals together and those are invaluable moments to get to know your children’s better.  Take advantage of it!

Cruise Jack and Jared 2015

  1. Vacations are about creating memories.

The big summer family vacations my family took when I was growing up are huge memories that I have from my childhood.  I may not remember everything that happened during the school year or the million things that my parents did for me throughout the year but I have precious memories from the vacations we took together as a family.  Surprisingly, I can remember so many things from the age of 5 when we made that classic family driving trip to the Grand Canyon and California.   I wouldn’t trade those trips for anything.  My father died when I was 9 years old and most of the memories I have of him are from the vacations we took as a family.

These are the memories that your children will remember years from now.  They will talk about the good things that happened on the trip and yes the bad things too.  Vacations are not always perfect but even some of the bad experiences can be learning moments and hopefully you can laugh about them later.   Take lots of photos and videos too because that will help embed those memories in your child’s mind.   I still love to look at my families’ old home movies.

  1. Vacations give you permission to relax and are healthy for you.

Parents and children constantly have their heads in work and school work.  Our kids have much more homework these days than we ever did as children.  They are under so much stress to keep up their grades to ensure they get into the colleges they want and to be involved in extracurricular activities.  Most families don’t even eat dinner together anymore.  Everyone is too busy going in different directions.   Go have fun together for a change.  Be sure and don’t schedule too many activities though on the vacation, remember this is all about fun and not stressing out about having to be somewhere every minute.

     5.  Vacations are about seeing new places and experiencing new things.

You don’t have to break the bank on vacations.  Whether you go far and take a luxurious vacation or do something nearby that is more economical, it will be beneficial.  You and your children will have several new experiences that they otherwise would not have.  My husband took my son, Jack scuba diving for the first time on our cruise which was an unbelievable experience for a father and son to share.  My other son Jared and I went on our first submarine ride together to see the wonders of sea life but stayed dry while doing it.  We loved it (both the sea life and staying dry).

Cruise Jay and Jack Scuba 2015

These are just a few of the many benefits.  Go with a great attitude, be ready to let loose and have fun.   I guarantee you will never be sorry that you took the time to take a family vacation.   Our recent cruise was priceless to me.  The four of us shared a cabin and yes it was uncomfortable and annoying at times but the night time banter that we had when we were all trying to go to sleep was priceless.

Here are just a few of the memories that I have from this trip that I will treasure forever:   Jack singing one of my favorite songs during Karaoke night just because he knew I loved it and wanted him to sing it.  I almost cry every time I think about it.   Also, watching Jared laugh his head off at the Comedy Shows  was priceless.  Jared loves comedy and kept us entertained the whole trip with his puns and sarcastic wit.  But the best memory of all was just being together for five days as a family of four.  How do you put a price on that?

Cruise Jackie and Jared

So it’s not too late to work in that last minute trip this summer before school starts!  Go make some memories and Bon Voyage!

Menopause the Musical: The Survivor Tour at The Music Hall at Fair Park!

menopause_webposter

Four women at a lingerie sale have nothing in common but a black lace bra AND memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, and much more!  Okay, that in itself may not sound very funny but I promise you that this musical will have you and your girlfriends laughing until you think you can’t laugh anymore.  This hilarious musical parody is set to classic tunes from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s that will make you want to get up and dance. This tour – Menopause The Musical®: The Survivor Tour® Benefiting Susan G. Komen® is the first of its kind, donating a portion of every ticket sale directly to the ongoing effort to save lives and end breast cancer forever.

Menopause 2

The cast of four women consists of breast cancer survivors and co-survivors that in itself is amazing.  Each one of the ladies are accomplished singers and actors with a list of performances as long as my arm.  They are definitely role models and a testimony to the “survivor” spirit.   They each have their own inspirational cancer story but you won’t hear it in the performance because this is all about fun and making fun of the trails and tribulations of Menopause.  The actresses are all hilarious in their respective roles and will thoroughly entertain you from beginning to end!

Menopause

What a fun event to go to with a group of girlfriends or sisters/mothers.  Most of you will be able to relate to some or all of the issues and will laugh for days afterwards (my friends and I are still texting each other about it)!    I saw this musical years ago and saw it again last night and it was truly just as funny the second time around!

Fun Facts:

  • The Survivor Tour cast includes breast cancer co-survivor Linda Boston (Professional Woman) and survivors Teri Adams (Iowa Housewife), Judy Blue (Soap Star), and Megan Cavanagh (Earth Mother) known for her role as Marla Hooch in the 1992 film A League of Their Own. For more information on the cast and tour, visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygJ5NCiqK20&feature=youtu.be
  • Menopause The Musical is recognized as the longest-running scripted musical production in Las Vegas and continues to entertain nightly at Harrah’s.
  • *In 2014-2016, GFour Productions, LLC will donate $50,000.00 to Susan G. Komen®. In addition, GFour will also donate to Komen $2.00 for every ticket sold to Menopause The Musical®: The Survivor Tour® performances from March 25, 2015 through June 30, 2016.

Planet blue3
Can it get any better? Planet Blue opened its doors July 2nd in their first Texas location – in DALLAS!  And the location is great!   The clothing store is located in the Knox-Henderson neighborhood that was already a pretty cool area but just got even cooler with this new retail addition.  The store has an open, airy, and earthy like atmosphere with plenty of room to shop.   If you’re not familiar with Planet Blue, it’s a Bohemian Fashion retail store that carries a wide range of women’s Bohemian inspired brands such as Blue Life, For Love and Lemons, Stone Cold Fox, Nightcap and many others.  The store carries everything from tops, shorts, jumpsuits, sweaters, skirts, dresses, and leggings to bathing suits and lingerie.

Planet Blue 2

Planet Blue 3 “Texans get it,” Vice President of Retail David Lindell said in a news release. “You can take fashion seriously, without taking yourself too seriously. It’s all about looking good, while having a good time doing it. We see the Dallas customer in our store daily and also feel their strong support in our online business, so we can’t wait to return the love by bringing the good vibes to Knox-Henderson.”  After meeting Mr. Lindell at the opening I believe he does get us in Dallas.  One question I had for him though was “What took you so long to get here”?!  I personally love the California Bohemian style and always enjoy shopping at their store when I’m in California.   I believe Texans will love it too!

Pippin Sizzles at Dallas Summer Musicals

PippinIt’s hard to summarize Pippin in a one sentence but I’m going to try.  This four time Tony Award Winning whimsical musical is a combination of Cabaret, Chorus Line, and Spamalot, with Cirque du Soleil like acrobats and a circus theme.  Sounds like a lot of going on right?  Well, there is, but it works and you can’t take your eyes off the stage for long or you’ll miss a magic trick or an incredible acrobatic feat.  These players are seriously talented both musically and physically.  This re-imagined version of the 40 year old musical has a beautiful score by Tony nominee Stephen Schwartz and is sure to make you want to buy the soundtrack.  The musical also features some really steamy and sizzling choreography by Tony Award-nominee Chet Walker in the style of Bob Fosse.  The acrobatics are incredible and are created by Gypsy Snider of the Montreal-based circus company LES7 DOIGTS DE LA MAIN (also known as 7 Fingers).

Pippin2

Ok, here’s the story – Pippin is the young son of King Charlemagne who’s going through a major identity crisis after he graduates from school and returns home to the Kingdom.  He just doesn’t
know what he wants to be when he grows up and goes on a dangerous and sometimes dark journey to find the meaning of his existence.  Sound heavy?  Stay tuned because it won’t stay that way for long.  There are so many extremely entertaining characters and performances that you will be thoroughly entertained.  One of the most talented new singers and dancer on the stage today, Sasha Allen plays the narrator and evil temptress of the show.  If that name sounds familiar it’s because she was on NBC’s The Voice and was a finalist on Season 4.   This girl was born to be on the stage and gives an incredible performance as Satan herself.  A special treat is the appearance of former TV actress Adrienne Barbeau who plays Pippin’s grandmother and gives a wonderful performance!  Who knew she could sing, dance, and do aerial tricks?   She is a very fun part of the musical.

pippin4

Pippin is played by the talented and good looking Kyle Selig (The Book of Mormon) who experiences a lot of angst over almost everything and decides maybe becoming the king is just too much responsibility for him or is it?  Will good or evil win?  Will he settle for the “normal” life?   Those are the big questions and you will have to go see for yourself how it ends.  Be prepared to be very entertained along the way – like seriously entertained.

Fun Facts:

  • The original production of Pippin, directed by Bob Fosse, debuted on Broadway in 1972, won five Tony Awards and closed in 1977.
  • Tony Award winner John Rubinstein, who created the role of Pippin in the 1972 original Broadway production returns to this production as Charles.
  • There are 6 yoga balls used in the show.
  • The acrobats usually spend an entire hour warming up before a performance.
  • There are 15 hula-hoops used throughout the show.
  • 7 feather fans are used in the entire show.
  • There are 17 acrobatic tricks in Magic to Do.
  • Gypsy Snider, who created all the circus elements, said “The life of an acrobat is how far we go to be extraordinary.”
  • The Manson Trio is named after Charles Manson. Bob Fosse was very interested in Manson.
  • Stephen Schwartz was only 24 years old when he wrote the show.
  • Pippin’s name, historically speaking, is actually spelled Pipen. Stephen Schwartz changed it so it wouldn’t be perceived as an adaptation of the Steinbeck novel, “The Short Reign of Pepin IV”. They liked the word “Pippin” because it suggested the slang meaning of “pip” – something nifty.

You’ll Have the Time of Your Life at “Dirty Dancing” at  DSM

Dirty DancingI can’t emphasize that line in the title enough.  What girl on Planet Earth didn’t love the 1987 movie “Dirty Dancing”?  It had everything, romance, forbidden love, sexy dancing (it was considered very racy at the time), comedy and yes, Patrick Swayze.  Well, we don’t get Patrick in this production I’m sad to say but it’s okay because we still have the character, Johnny Castle in all his sexy dancing glory.

The story is kind of like “Dancing With the Stars” set in 1963.  Take a girl who’s never danced before and turn her into a professional dancer in 5 days and throw in some romance, teenage rebellion, and some social issues on top and you have “Dirty Dancing”.  The story takes place in the summer of 1963 and  the main character Frances “Baby” Houseman is vacationing in the New York Catskill Mountains at a resort with her parents and older sister.  Baby’s character embodies the time period.  She’s a sheltered, upper class teenage girl who has lofty aspirations of joining the Peace Corp and changing the world until she lays eyes on Johnny Castle, the sexy dance instructor at the resort.  Johnny is the forbidden fruit of this story.   He’s lower middle class but red hot and Baby’s feeling something she’s never felt before, passion.  Passion for both Johnny and for dancing.  And it turns out she’s pretty good at both.

I took some girlfriends with me to see this production and we all agreed that the musical was very fun and most importantly stayed true to the movie.  We were all happy about that because you can’t mess with perfection.  The musical has all the songs that we loved in the movie such as, “You Don’t Own Me”, In the Still of the Night”,  “Hungry Eyes”,  and the Oscar winning song “I’ve had the Time of My Life”.   The lead performers were excellent in their roles and the lead vocalists delivered the songs and the dancers delivered the dancing.   One stand out performance was the actress who played Penny.  She is a phenomenal dancer.  But here was the real test and it passed.   I still got tears in my eyes at the closing number where Baby and Johnny perform and she succeeds at making that scary dance lift.  Baby nailed it and that remains one of best scenes ever.

The set design and rotating stage were very innovative.  The background screen changed flawlessly from scene to scene and enhanced the experience of the 60’s Catskills.   And yes, they still practiced dance lifts in the lake, on stage.  It was almost like watching a movie within a theater production.  Very cool.

But the musical really wasn’t complete until the Johnny delivered the famous line “Nobody puts Baby in the corner” and the audience exploded in applause.  This is musical theater at its best and yes, it may sound a little cheesy but we all had the time of our lives!  Make it a girls night out or make it a date night but just go see it!

Dallas Summer Musicals Brings The Magic of Cinderella to Dallas

Cinderella_Poster_WebDallas Summer Musicals presents the 2013 Tony Award Winning Broadway Musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA!  The production is playing for a limited engagement at the Music Hall at Fair Park from June 9-21 and is then moving to Fort Worth’s Bass Performance Hall from June 23-28th

It was Opening Night of CINDERELLA and I’ve never seen so many little princesses wearing their princess costumes in one place outside of Disneyland.  I’m pretty sure that the musical lived up to all of their expectations, I know it did mine.   Adjectives such as beautiful, enchanting, magical, and amazing come to mind.  This production of CINDERELLA combines the classic story’s elements of the wicked stepmother and sisters, handsome prince, glass slipper, and pumpkin with a few contemporary additions.  Our heroine in this story is spirited and loving but will fight to make her dreams come true.  The production is romantic, funny, beautiful costumes and sets, and includes classic songs such as “In My Own Little Corner”. The leads played by Paige Faure and Andy Huntington Jones deliver outstanding performances and you will love Kecia Lewis’ performance as the spirited and over the top Fairy Godmother.  When you go make sure you don’t miss the unique, magical, and twirling costume changes/transformations throughout the musical.

 Cinderella DSM Final

Did you know?  That CINDERELLA was written for television — debuting in 1957 starring Julie Andrews?   In 2013, the show made its long-overdue Broadway debut. CINDERELLA has music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, a new book by Douglas Carter Beane and original book by Oscar Hammerstein II.

Real Posh Mom Goes Country, Urban Style

Johnny Lee and Me Final

How better to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the movie and cultural phenomena “Urban Cowboy” then to go to a Johnny Lee and the Urban Cowboy Band Concert?  That’s just what I did last weekend!  The concert was part of this summer’s Castle Hills’ Spring Concert Series in Lewisville, Texas.  It was a fun night filled with nostalgic country music in a beautiful, neighborhood venue shared with old friends.   What a big thrill it was to meet Mr. “Lookin’ for Love” himself, Johnny Lee.  His huge hit is one of the top 100 country songs of all time and was the musical centerpiece of the ‘80s classic movie “Urban Cowboy”.  Johnny still sounds great and continues to perform with his band around the country.  He remains a favorite with country music fans old and young alike because of his classic country hit songs (he’ll be releasing some new music soon) and his crowd pleasing concerts.
Johnny Lee Concert2

Urban Cowboy35 years after the huge movie hit, “Urban Cowboy”  Texas Monthly magazine is featuring the story behind the movie in this month’s issue.  The article includes lots of juicy tidbits from several of Gilley’s country musicians and key players.

Fun Facts:   The movie itself was based on an article that author Aaron Latham wrote for Esquire magazine about the world of country music and it’s cliente at the infamous Gilley’s bar in Pasadena, Texas (outside Houston). The popularity of the mechanical bull and country music exploded after the movie was released in 1980.  John Travolta’s already successful movie career skyrocketed to a new height.  If you weren’t a country music fan before the movie came out, you were for sure afterwards.   The whole country rushed out and bought cowboys boots and shirts and learned to how to dance the Two Step and the Cotton Eyed Joe.   Almost everyone agrees that country music was changed forever after the “Urban Cowboy” craze.

Watch the story on CMT’s upcoming special “About Urban Cowboy: The Rise and Fall of Gilley’s” this Saturday, June 13th 8:00/9:00 Central.

The stylish, storied Hotel ZaZa in Dallas has played host to many affairs — including conferences, luncheons, fundraising galas and private events — so Hotel Zaza wanted to show their appreciation at their annual Spring Soiree held on Thursday, April 23rd.

The spirit of “Living the Sweet Life” descended upon the poolside of hotel for this retro-themed springtime fete, despite the threat of rain. The beautiful and interesting people of Dallas were out in full force wearing their most sophisticated Spring attire.  Waiters served delicious appetizer bites by Hotel ZaZa’s Dragonfly restaurant and the beat was provided by DJ Sober and DSQ Electric.

Much of the attention went to the models floating in the pool on inflatable swans (yes, I said swans).  At the height of the evening girls wearing polka dot dresses paraded into the pool area holding sparklers! Many guests were striking a pose in front of their signature Z for photo opps, like my husband and me did for a fun date night.

An Interview the Young Star of “LITTLE BOY”

Little boy imageThe movie LITTLE BOY is opening tomorrow, Friday, April 24th and it sounds like a wonderful family movie! LITTLE BOY is a film about a young boy who is willing to do whatever it takes to bring his dad home from World War II alive. The heartwarming story will capture your heart and lift your spirits as it reveals the indescribable love a little boy has for his father and the love a father has for his son. Set in the 1940s, LITTLE BOY is an instant cinematic classic that captures the wonder of life through the eyes of a 7- year-old little boy. Written and directed by Smithsonian Institute Award winning director Alejandro Monteverde, LITTLE BOY highlights themes of faith, hope and love in the face of adversity.little boyFrom the filmmakers who won the prestigious Toronto Film Festival People’s Choice Award for their movie Bella, LITTLE BOY features an all-star cast with two Oscar nominated actors and is directed by Smithsonian Institute Award Winning Director Alejandro Monteverde; produced by Eduardo Verástegui and Leo Severino; written by Alejandro Monteverde and Pepe Portillo.
littleboy3 The cast includes some wonderful, well known actors such as Kevin James, Ted Levine, Michael Rapaport, Tim Wilkinson and Emily Watson.  The 7-year-old main character, Pepper Flynt Busbee is played by the actor, Jakob Salvati.  Jakob is a terrific and gifted young man who already has a lot of credits for someone his age.  He has appeared in the TV series Grimm and Cleaner.  I recently had the great opportunity to interview this very talented young actor:
Jakob 2 Jacqueline:
Have you always wanted to be an actor?

Jakob:
Yes, it’s always been a dream. I’d like to be one of those actors who people can recognize on screen and look up to as an inspiration.

Jacqueline:
What do you like most about school?

Jakob:
Language Arts is the best part of school for me and my favorite subject.

Jacqueline:
What was your experience like being the star of a major movie?

Jakob:
It was a privilege and it was great even though it was hard work.

Jacqueline:
What did you learn from the film about bullying?

Jakob:
As far as bullies, they only go after the weak, so if you’re being bullied I would say to stand up for yourself like Pepper in LITTLE BOY movie.

Jacqueline:
What are your interests/hobbies when you’re not acting?

Jakob:
I like to hang out with my family and watch family movies. I also like to play soccer, and I love parkour!

Jacqueline:
Do you have any advice to other kids who want to be an actor?

Jakob:
I would just say to pray about it and work hard and one day that chance will come.

LITTLE BOY deals with some powerful themes such as prejudice, bullying, love, hope and never ending faith.  It is sure to move you and your family.  It could also help open dialogue with your children about issues in their own lives. I can’t wait to take my teenage boys to see it! Rating is PG-13.
